KENT MONKMAN

Painter

I found out about Kent Monkman through the CBC show the 8th fire. Apparently he makes a lot of money off his paintings. I e-mailed him my questions about the Indian Act. His manager replied saying that unfortunately because of Kent’s busy production schedule he will not be able to get back to you.

Kent Monkman does a lot of classical paintings with a modern twist. In his interview with David Furnish he explains it like this: This whole body of work is about revisiting these early images that represent the very safe and secure foundation of the mythology about the exploration of the west. When you look at these paintings as an aboriginal person, you realize how subjective they are. So when I make these paintings I'm not necesarily repainting history, but I'm nudging people toward seeing that there are these big missing narratives. A lot of painters at that time were projecting Christian ideologies onto the North American landscape. So with my paintings I'm looking at the same land -the mountains, trees, sky- and inserting elements of our own sexuality as well.
